Sea of hooks by lindsay hill6/21/2023 ![]() Neither linear nor necessarily connected, these floating mini-stories come together to tell Christopher’s story, from his life as a child in San Francisco to a journey of discovery he undertakes in Bhutan. Each section, sometimes only a paragraph long, is given a title, the sum making up Christopher’s life and experiences. Hill opts to tell the story in a way befitting the fractured emotions of his protagonist, Christopher Westall. Indebted as much to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as it is to any number of young adult fiction about the loss of innocence, Sea of Hooks nearly transcends its genre, a harrowing journey inside the mind of a damaged young man who is dealing with the aftermath of his mother’s suicide. In his debut novel, Sea of Hooks, Portland-based poet Lindsay Hill turns his eye to prose, creating a lyrical, dense and sometimes frustrating read filled with moments both beautiful and devastating. ![]()
